  • Best tool a genealogist AND a scrapbooker can have! I have been researching my genealogy for over 6 years now and it is neverending!. I saw this while getting back into my research in November and asked my husband for this for Christmas. It's the only thing I asked for.
Works great but could use a couple of improvements I bought the FlipPal to scan in pictures from scrapbooks so I could share pictures digitally with relatives. It is fast and easy but it sure eats through the batteries! I wish there was an option to plug it in when you are doing large projects in one place. The stitching program works very well but it would be nice if was just a little larger.
Great little gadget I managed to get this from the US as it wasn't available in the UK. It is small light but robust and I wanted it to scan documents relating to family history. The best features are its portability image quality easy stitching software and colour restoration if you don't have other ways to do this. The drawbacks are that it doesn't have an AC adaptor and I kept running out of batteries at first. Now I have got rechargeables but it is still quite power hungry. Also you need to stitch several scans to get an A4 size document so it is a bit fiddly. For my particular task I ended up borrowing a friend's normal scanner or it would have taken forever. The best use would be for smaller photographs pictures or documents in albums or frames small objects craft uses and for use as a portable scanner when you have no access to any other sort. Definitely recommend it as an addition to your normal scanner but not instead of it.
Comparison to flatbed scanner Overall Rating 9/10What I was looking for I was looking for a fast convenient way to scan old family photos both loose and photo albums over 1000 total. What I considered1 Epson Perfection 2450 Photo. This is an older legalsize flatbed scanner. Quality is superb.2 Flashpoint personal 4x6 photo scanner. Cheap scans directly to SDCard. However these scanners are prone to horrible banding problems that for me render the scan useless.3 Portable scanner around $230250 price range. These seem ideal for highvolume scanning and I couldn't find any reports of the banding issues as seen with the cheap personal scanners.
The best investment I have made! I have been researching my family history forn16 years and when I first saw this a year ago I just had to try it. Since then I have brought it with to several family events including a family reunion I was invited to with several branches to my family. I scanned several hundred photos that weekend including one of my ggggrandfather and his brothers and my gggggrandmother! I have since been organizing and putting into folders as people are identified and have shared all that I have with every branch of my family I can find.
Amazing Little Scanner! I received the FlipPal as a Christmas gift and I could not be happier with it. Scanning 4 x 6 photos is a breeze and while it takes a little longer to scan larger documents or photos the built in software that seamlessly stitches the pieces of the scanned item together works great. So far I have only used it at home but I can't wait to take this lightweight device with me to a research facility. Or the houses of my relatives for that matter. Because the FlipPal is so small and easy to use it will be easy to scan all my receipts as well.
A Great Genealogy Tool I have had my Flip Pal for a year now after TELLING my husband that would be my Christmas gift in 2010. I have scanned thousands of pictures books and documents with it since then. I have taken it into museums libraries and courthouses. I love taking it to a relative's house and being able to talk to them and look through their photo albums and scan as we talk without having to disturb their album. It is very fast much faster than my big scanner. I would love for there to be a bigger version someday for 8 x 10 photos etc but it is worth every penny for what it does so well. Even if you are not interested in genealogy if you have boxes of real photos from the last 50 years it is the easiest way to get them to a digitized format.
This thing is amazing! I LOVE my Flip Pal. It's small very fast the colors are great and it uses a regular SD card so you can use the one provided or your own. I am using it to scan all my old snapshots so I have a digital copy in case of fire flood etc.One downside is it goes through batteries pretty quickly. It comes with 4 AA's. Once they were used up I started using rechargeables. That's really the only way to go so you aren't wasting a ton of money on batteries. The other downside is that the scanner will cut off about 1/2 mm of the top of your photo.
Great little scanner! Our son is getting married so I started scanning every picture I could find with him in it for a slide show. That totaled over 700 photos. I brought it with me on a trip to my mothers and scanned photos there. It seams together larger photos beautifully. I do genealogy also and this scanner is just what I need wish I had bought it sooner. Would recommend to everyone.
Awesome product! This portable scanner is amazing! It came in right on time. I had a bicentennial project to do for a program and it scanned the old photos perfectly! Definitely recommend it! Thanks.
